Stephen King has a quote on terror that divides into three parts- the gross out, horror, and terror with the last part being “when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute.”
I think that your story qualifies. I’ve been in many situations where I didn’t remember somebody and they were justifiably hurt and angry. I couldn’t imagine if that was my family and all of those connections were just . . . gone. Truly terrifying. Great job!
I really wanted to give more details, but as it is, the basic idea is across. A friend read it and put a sci-fi twist in it. I may have to write that version next.
