The Bridge, Pt. 2

I awoke to distant screaming. Within a minute, I was in the main room with five of the other adults. None of us spoke. All of us carried our weapons.

The night was black, any light from stars and moon shrouded by clouds. We had left the bridge up for the woman. Just in case.

It hadn’t done any good. As we scurried across, I lifted my rifle to my shoulder and pointed it toward the mainland and the screams. But the screams were fading away. As we approached the mainland, I saw pairs of yellow and white eyes gleaming in the forest.

The screams were gone. We stepped onto solid ground knowing we were too late to help the woman. I stared at a pair of the eerie, unblinking eyes, waiting for them to get closer. They never moved.

When I studied them I saw a black box surrounding the pair of eyes – no, lights. “Cameras,” I whispered over my shoulder.

James lowered his rifle. His sudden movement was immediately followed by a bright camera flash and an explosive bang. I fell to the ground, disoriented.
