Maybe it just comes down to what you mean by meaning? I think that what you described, the evocation of an emotional response that somehow resonates with the human experience, is sufficient meaning and value for any piece of art.

Writing should have meaning – but the delight of good writing is that it contains many facets. An individual correlates your work with their own experiences and walks away satisfied that you somehow are a kindred spirit. In myself, this feeling of camaraderie that evokes the longing you speak of.
