Ma didn’t seem to like the boyfriends..that he had. Would Ma care if a girl shaved her legs correctly? I’m assuming you meant shaving a face. Therefore, the character with trousers is a male. And seeing as Ma is so picky, I went with a 50s-60s feel, with the proper dress and the clean living. I dunno, maybe this could be a girl in trousers, shaving her legs, and growing up in a later era with a very OCD Mom.. hmm.
Fitted sheets could be the only defence against this overbearing mother – but I expect that she wouldn’t approve. A rather poignant little scene, and very nicely written.
Thank you, JonB. Elsha, honestly I originally thought of the protag as a man, but since I hit the max character limit I changed to ‘boyfriends’ to save one character, reimagining it as a female character but missing the shaving reference. Nevertheless, I have no problem with my protagonist being a man who has romantic interest in men; it could be that he has just such trouble articulating the minor things his mom had complained about, he didn’t even want to get into her issues with his dating boys in the first place. However, since this is really a tangent that may interfere with the main gist, I’ll change the shaving ref instead, I think.
