Well that was odd. One part mystical, perhaps with a dash of ’we’re too addicted to news and media’? Mostly just disturbingly dependent on something, whatever that something might be. Very well written for creepiness effect.

I originally wrote this with the podcast Welcome to Night Vale on the brain (got into it a few months ago, just caught up); and as much as I love the narrator, I also like the idea that, knowingly or not, he wields more control than we humble listeners realize (in a sort of way that makes you wonder if he got a day off because there’s nothing to report, or there’s nothing to report because he has a day off). But I’m very glad to know that it still works without that context!
