Effluvium

The girl looked out wistfully, the cold, bitter wind cutting through her hair; her senses were assaulted as she began to taste salt on the tip of her tongue, burning the back of her throat. Behind her, a voice echoed, a voice that seemed to fugue into ambiguity. The figure it belonged to had become opaque, a mere outline in the fog which desperately tried to choke her.

She moved forward – in which direction, it did not matter, for she could not even see the ground anymore. Just a pale, lifeless cloud of smoke that seemed to engulf the entire world around her. After a while, she could hear the faint lapping of the waves against the rock. She guessed which direction it came from, then desperately tried to locate its source. It became louder and louder, until the sound itself was almost tangible.
