This is hilarious, and warm, and actually quite touching; and the third paragraph made me laugh out loud. Great characterisation of the roomates, and an overall good read.

I liked the first half. The second half seems to get derailed into absurdism. That’s fun, in its own way, so a good entry to the challenge.
