Ew, I kind of suspected the ending but had hoped against it. Very nicely told from the perspective of the sacrifice, showing his willingness and sense of import for the act without droning on and on about it.

I really like the image of putting the still hot ash under his eyes! For some reason this speaks so much to the gravity of the situation to me.
