The Real Summer Reading List (ending)
The Hunger Games: I should clarify – the movie, NOT the book. Why should a student spend a couple of hours reading a book when they could watch a movie in a little over two hours? The movie allows for the reader to have the picture painted in their head for them, and it’s easier connect because you see all the facial expressions. Students are bound to find themselves at the movies over summer break, so why not have one be a summer “reading” assignment – they can even eat popcorn and have soda while doing it, too! And did I mention that Jennifer Lawrence stars at Katniss Everdeen…?
Summer reading doesn’t have to be a drag anymore. It doesn’t have to be a stressful last-minute assignment where one takes pleasure in getting by with a B. Students should be able to enjoy summer reading, not dread it. As students are so busy during summer, they couldn’t possibly ever have time for summer reading.
Who knows? Maybe next year Hop on Pop and The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food will crack the reading list…
