Evening Sounds At Home
Crinkling roll and clattering smash
Silverware drawer refilled at last
Plastic scrape and tapping out
Sister measures the right amount
Intermittent notes sustained
As brother on piano strains
Whispers numbers to himself
A complex piece upon the shelf
Tinkling bell and clicking claws
Of tiny doggy’s dainty paws
Hissing water, washing pan
Humming of the ceiling fan
Low resounding heated breath
Furnace blows from wooden death
Bread machine spins round and round
On countertop, it might fall down
Eyes now closed against lamps which glisten
Silence is my sound… I’d rather listen
