Snow Day

Moving nothing but his arm, Scott reached for his cell on the bedside table, pressed a button, and held it up to his ear. He moved slowly from where he was lying on his back, but Kate still woke up. He could sense the moment she woke, even before she opened her brown eyes and stared silently at him.

When he set the phone down again, she propped her head up with her hand and asked, “So, is the office open?”

Scott reached over and wrapped a lock of her soft brown hair around his finger. “Delayed opening. Two hours late.”

She nodded and smiled, but he could see disappointment in her eyes. “I can make you a Valentine’s Day breakfast, then.”

“Or…”

She raised an eyebrow.

He slid his hand behind her head and pulled her face down to his for a gentle kiss. “Or I could call in. I probably can’t get out of the driveway.”

“Really?” Her eyes lit up and her smile grew. He loved making her happy.

Instead of replying, he pulled her close, wrapping both arms around her. Everyone needed a snow day once in a while.
