The Nine of Swords

The pen on my page has nearly dried, the words are permanent. I dare not turn my back to the door. The light slices through the cracks and every sound from outside are like stabs. I stay poised on my seat like an ancient sentinel who has been long forgotten. My eyes dart back and forth like two flies—the only movement I allow myself. I can go another day without water.
