The Briefcase
I heard the garbled announcement from the street. I had to hustle if I was going to catch the 1 Train uptown. I bounded down the stairs past a man with a briefcase on his phone and almost knocked him down. I made it through the turnstile with one quick swipe having mastered the technique. The train was now in the station with the doors open which could seal shut at any moment and seal my doom as being late for work. I can’t be late again this week.
“Whew!” I made it inside as the doors closed behind me thinking this drama was over when I was shocked as the man with the briefcase threw his briefcase between the doors to stop the train from leaving and to force himself inside. The conductor had all ready pulled out however and didn’t see him! He started running with the train screaming:
“STOP THE TRAIN!”
As the train picked up speed I took the only action I could think of and I booted his briefcase out the doors onto the tracks, with papers flying everywhere.
A contract was left inside the train.
