Interesting opening. Whenever Jews are mentioned in a prisoner sense, I always think Nazis though this could be far earlier than that (Egyptians) or later than that (a future where antisemitic countries force the Jews back into a prisoner status).
Some sentences could be evened out a little (unless you intend on the protagonist being an academic) but overall I think it is interesting. What is worth s/he becoming a prisoner?
