“I love you, " I said.
Two years in the future I heard you say “I love you too”.
I hesitated. That moment of panic must have flashed in my eyes as you seemed to tense up. You shifted uncomfortably.
I tried to make up for it. Added abruptly: “You are in every breath I take, in every note I hear, in every–”
Two years in the future you interrupted me to say: “You are in every breath I take, in every note I hear, in every bite I eat.”
You stole my line? That was not the ending I had had in mind.
You let out a loud sigh, crossed your arms.
“I don’t think this is working out, John.”
I listened for the future you. Two years in the future I heard you say “It’s beautiful.”
“You’re not going to say anything?” you added.
I listened for the future you. “It fits perfectly!”
I couldn’t say a word. You just shook your head and left without saying goodbye.
As you slammed the door, two years in the future I heard you say “Of course I’ll marry you!”
“George.”
I got off my knee and reached for the remote.
