The Strange Gift of Adam Fisher

Adam Fisher had an unusual gift. He first knew it when he built a cathode ray tube out of his sister’s Power Wheels Jeep when he was 7 or 8. He was asked to leave the school’s latchkey program when he assembled a crime lab out of the classroom aquarium and the contents of the art supplies closet. He was still bitter about that—he thought they should have thanked him finding out those things about Ms. DuMont, who didn’t work there anymore.

Adam always tired of his creations after a while. Making them was the real fun for him. Once he knew they worked, he gave them away, or he sold them at a garage sale. Today, Adam was offering up a few decommissioned pieces of the particle accelerator he built in his kitchen. He really hoped Mr. Marks listened when he explained not to use the “puree” setting on the blender. Adam whistled as he counted his money, then stopped cold. He ran off like a shot to Mrs. Ray’s house. He suddenly recalled, he had discovered the Higgs Boson, and the only evidence was in the toaster!
