Bagel Bushes
My mom and dad arrived the day before my sister and her kids on the annual family gathering. They got in late and the kids went to bed shortly after arriving.
This year I had a new row of blueberry bushes growing in the garden. I got up early, before anyone else was awake and went to the doughnut shop and bought some blueberry bagels. I went out to the garden and hung the dozen bagels on the branches of the blueberry bushes. I went inside and waited.
The kids came down like clockwork closely followed by my mom. Dressed in their pajamas, they were looking to start the day.
“Come on kids, let’s go pick some bagels for breakfast.” My mother was horrified. “They can’t go outside now, it’s too wet” There was dew on the grass, but a little wet feet wouldn’t cause harm. “They’ll catch their death out there.” She absolutely forbade their going out barefoot and jacketless. It took a good fifteen minutes go bundle them up and lead them outside.
By the time we got outside, the squirrels had eaten all the bagels.
