Rebirth on Safari
All bike messengers harbor a death wish. Being alive is the greatest adrenaline rush and, for Jim, the ultimate let down. For all of the chances Jim takes on the road, he believes he’s truly a coward. Today is different. He’s finally on the African Safari trip he’s always dreamed of.
When the group sets off on their bikes across the Serengeti Jim rushes to the lead. He doesn’t want to make friends. He wants to take chances. He pulls ahead, hot air rushing past his fevered mind.
He can hear someone pulling up on his right. He hates riding with groups. The guy pulls up next to him, smirking. “Hey.” Jim grunts in response.
Neither of them see the leopard pacing them. When it pounces on Jim’s left, it grabs his calf, sinking it’s teeth to bone. He doesn’t remember it but Seth, the challenger, retells the story as he is lying in the hospital bed. He doesn’t care, all he can think about is Seth’s invitation to join his travelling band. It’s the first time he’s wanted to live. He doesn’t need a leg to jam.
