The Closet, Part 2

Father pounded down the hall after them. Jenna almost cried out in fear, but she opened the refrigerator and shoved her head in to cool her brow and hide her face.

Rob was saying something about her getting more computer time, but Jenna couldn’t focus on the argument. She was too concerned about Father seeing the file. She gave him an exasperated sigh.

“Will you two shut up! I’ve had enough of it!” He slammed his fist down on the island counter. He had never stricken any of them, but he was loud, big and frightening. “Sorry, Father.” They spoke in unison. The apology was a house rule and their combined fear was easily mistaken for humility. “Go to your rooms.” He dismissed them exactly as they had planned. Maybe this was going to work. Jenna prayed that he wouldn’t notice the missing file for the next 24 hours. She wouldn’t have the chance to put it back until he left on his morning walk again.

“Yes, Father.” He didn’t look at them as they left the room.
