Sleeping
She had left him sleeping.
It was the calmest she’d seen him in weeks. She slowly removed herself from his side, as not to disturb the tranquility he seldom acquired. She wasn’t sure if this was the right thing to do. She wasn’t sure about anything. All she knew was that this time when she left, he couldn’t fight back.
She got a chill as she stepped into the moonlight. She felt strangely disconnected from the world. Everything seemed more distant with each step. The naked trees that lined the trail seemed to point her in the direction of the lake. As she approached, she took in a deep breath of the fresh, cool air.
She had always loved the water.
