My contextual guess, based on never having been in the UK: “Loose Chippings” is a sign they put up after road construction, to warn people about gravel that could be flung up onto their windscreen. Sorta like “Loose Gravel” signs you see from time to time stateside. They go up all over the country, but you never actually reach the heralded town of Loose Chippings.

Elsha, ‘gunny’? I watch plenty of US TV, but never heard that one. Until I got to your correction I thought I was struggling with Transatlantic bilingualism too.

Very fun. I loved not only the humor of it but the sort of magical ’we’re on an adventure, albeit a quiet one’ feel to the narrative voice. If I ever get over to England again I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the turn-off for Loose Chipping.
