Reunions

I immediately jumped up and ran around the little clearing we were in, touching everything I could. It was like I needed more reassurance that this was all real. I think I would’ve kept on trying to convince myself if I hadn’t heard the flutter of wings behind me and a slight giggle. “I told you she’d be happy to see us!”

“Kylie?” I turned around and my little faerie friend floated next to Drae’s head. She giggled again and did a fancy flip in the air, as if she wanted to continue throwing it in my face that she could fly and I couldn’t. Drae seemed to be in the bragging mood, too, as he lazily stretched out and unfolded his beautifully scaled wings. With a quick wink in my direction he continued to stretch them out to their full length and quickly hit Kylie in the back of the head with one. “Hey!” she trilled at him, not really hurt except her pride.

I slowly slid down to the ground and rested against a tree trunk. The excitement had burned out and all I felt was fear. “Drae?” I whispered, “Why am I here?”
