the Parents

“Why do you have to do that? You know how my parents are!” Emily was furious with me.

“Yeah, they’re overly conservative, uninformed, biggots!” I cried angrily.

“They were raised that way!”

“I don’t care damnit, I am your girlfriend! We, as in you and I, are in a LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP! They are going to have to accept that one day!”

“You know this is just as hard for me as it is for you!” She yelled at me, turning her face away to try and hide the tears that were starting to form in her eyes even though I’d already seen them.

“I know it’s hard, but I refuse to sit there and let them pretend I’m not in a relationship with you! Were you even there tonight? Your mother asked me if I had a lucky man in my life yet!”

Emily was silent for a long time. I wanted to say something, anything, something that would make our problems go away and make her happy again-but what was there to say? My heart broke when I heard her sniffling and I wanted so badly to take her in my arms.

“Go away,” she told me and I listened.
