Here are my comments at the time of judging the Anti-Gravity contest.
The story is well-written, with good characterisation, but leaves crucial questions unanswered.
Since when does the Flat Earth Society have the authority to repeal laws? There’s nothing in your story about them controlling the government.
I don’t understand what the weights are for. If the repeal succeeds, they’re useless. If it fails, they’re still useless. What are they trying to achieve?
It’s not a serious take on the subject of anti-gravity, it’s a satire on the kind of people that might try to repeal the law of gravity.
The Flat Earth Society is a group of people that for some reason (allegedly) insist on believing that the Earth isn’t round, despite the evidence all around them. Just the right … frame of mind to think they could repeal the law of gravity, it seems to me. The weights? Come on, these people clearly don’t have a good grasp of physics.
I disagree that they would think they could repeal the Law of Gravity. Megalomania and religious literalism are very different delusions. If they’d said they were going to pray for gravity to be repealed, that might have been more plausible.
Obviously they don’t have a good grasp of physics, but in my opinion the purpose of the weights still doesn’t come across. Taking measures to counter-act the very thing they’re there to do gives the impression that they’re hoping to fail.
