so,, the notes they are getting means Bills, Dollars, right?
and skully helped me figure out what two more weeks meant.. so the question is, can’t she learn a talent, or do something to help make a buck for next year?
There are aspects here that I think you only get when you’ve been to the Edinburgh Festival (or similar street theatre events) – lots of tourists throwing money at anything that entertains and amuses them, regardless of quality.
This story is in parts based on my observations of homeless people in Edinburgh during the festival, and trying to imagine how the sudden influx of ‘competition’ feels to them. Living on the streets is her talent, her skill. As such, she is envious of the success of these artists who are playing a game that seems to her a mockery of her hard life on the streets. Perhaps there are also elements of sloth, anger – even greed here.
But enough self-analysis of the story – I’ll let the reader decide what they feel its all about…
Interesting how the three paragraphs of the story have three very different moods (at least, that’s how I see them) – pitiful, businesslike, and envious, respectively, would be my first stab at pegging them.
ya… very sad indeed. it has very somber imagery here. I actually felt cold reading it as she nestled between the light posts and the bakery wall.. Great description.
