A couple of quibbles.

In my experience it isn’t that she doesn’t know. she knows full well that she wants to be with someone else.

And realistically, this isnt the woman he loved, she is still just a girl.

Correct on both points. What you don’t see is the other guy in the story, which I didn’t include (time, size, etc). Good eye Duck.
