Barring the Cross
Star in the sky, O bejewel’d orb,
Me hearties your dim fire absorb.
Bar not our inquisitions now;
Sea life doth bat upon our prow.
Asleep we are in weeds of sea,
Foam flits about like potpourri.
Deep waters lie beneath us here;
Home gives us hope, however sheer.
Bell after bell my shipmates peal!
Dark are my thoughts behind the wheel!
Farewell life, save if you, the star,
When we request, guide from afar.
Place and the times stretch on until
Far blends with near, our lives fulfill’d.
Face unto face with God we’ll roam;
Bar us, He will, from going home.
