Slow smile

Sure, she’s pretty but it’s about more than that. You two connect. Anything you throw at her, she can throw right back. You figured out what’s going on in that predictable little head of hers in under five minutes, but something tells you her heart would take about five years.

A slow smile spreads across my face. I don’t know why, but for once I think I’m happy.

I open my eyes, only to quickly shut them against the suns glare. I smile again in spite of myself.

The action felt strange, like the first time a baby tries to walk, without confidence or perfection but a wonderful feeling all the same. It’s a shame no one is here to see it, I haven’t smiled in so long…

With a groan I throw off the covers. A shiver runs down my spine, it’s colder than I thought.

I glance over at the mirror across the room. My hair looks like a haystack, my blue eyes are bright and the unfamiliar smile is still playing around my lips.

Maybe today won’t be so bad…
