As I said before in an earlier comment, this reminds me of Gaiman’s Neverwhere, which I very highly recommend reading if you haven’t already. However, your story is even more surprising and unusual than Gaiman’s! I’m hooked.

Yeah I love the two hands and feet repetition, it means the pirates aren’t bipedal.. and that is intriguing. :)
