Shutting Down the Gateway

From The New York Times, November 2, 2009:

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Gateway to the West is suffering the terrible and tragic phenomenon of massive riots today as tensions have been stretched beyond their breaking points.

Violence first erupted at the base of the Gateway Arch at 10:30 yesterday morning when persons incorrectly perceived as terrorists were seen at the base of the massive landmark. A brawl ensued when bystanders attempted to incapacitate the individuals; the arrival of police and security guards served only to exacerbate the situation. Shortly thereafter, fighting broke out in the downtown region; it is unknown what, if any, connection the two incidents have. However, this second wave of animosity spread with ferocious rapidity. Missouri governor Jay Nixon has formally enlisted the aid of the National Guard. Fighting was still far from resolved as of this writing; there have been twelve confirmed fatalities thus far, and seventy-eight individuals have been arrested.
