If Only She Knew

C’h’caaa watched, all its eyes focused on the girl as she let go of her human mother’s hand and walked nervously through the muttering crowd. Her eyes, two small violet specks, were focused on its largest one; the one that was nearly her height.

The blonde human male reached his hand out and helped the girl onto the stage. She looked slightly less nervous when he flashed her his toothy grin. “Well, uh, folks, this is highly unorthodox but the Beholder has spoken.” He turned to the row of contestants behind him with a shrug, “Sorry ladies.”

C’h’caaa watched the parade of beauties leave the stage, knowing it had saved them. Then it watched the human male make a speech and present the half-elf girl with a cheque, flowers, and a tiara. She cried as she walked along the stage, her eyes searching for her mother.

The ordeal ended, she was handed down to her mother who hugged her tightly. Tears sprang into all of C’h’caaa’s eyes as it saw through the hug the seeds it had planted today; the seeds of pride and fear.
