They’re not. The MSM consistently distorts the actual Mayan predictions for the changing of the b’ak’tun in the Long Count. First, the solar alignment thing is actually not going to happen on the solstice of 2012, but much earlier; second, there are predicted dates for world events after its supposed destruction; third, to the Mayans, the end of the world was a good thing, meaning parties and goodwill and joy—it was not bad; and lastly, the Mayans never actually predicted that the world would end.
Muffy is probably right about the whole self-fulfillment thing, though.
Think about it, if you have to make your calendars out of stone, do you really want to make one longer than a few thousand years? You wouldn’t want to put all future calendar makers out of a job, would you?
