[He then proceeds to give a 12-hour-long lecture. “…and that’s everything we know about physics.”]
Cute story. Though I question the point of leaving out the word “wrong” given that it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that’s what he’s going to say. There’s not exactly a lot of suspense you can build up at that point.
It’s sort of a homage to the Firesign Theater record, “Everything You Know Is Wrong”. At the end of the record, the aliens say “Everything you know is…” and then go away. Besides, I couldn’t fit “wrong” into the remaining 4 characters without rewriting the whole thing.
But thanks for the comments, and point. Sometimes not delivering the punchline is as effecting as delivering it. Just ask Mony Python.
Interesting debate on the pay-off line. Bit dry as stories go, but it fits the setting and story idea. Well written as well with authentic sounding dialog for stuffy scientist types.
Yes it’s a dry story, as it almost entirely a concept story. I intentionally did not name the speaker other than by his job.
Implications of such a discovery would be enormous and over turn much of what is known in particle physics and sink a couple of Theories Of Everything™ in the process.
