Not sure I got it, but it felt like a genuine apology for something that had to be.

It’s meant to be a message from a departing ship, received as a huge comet crashes into earth.

I should probably try to make it a bit clearer :-)

i got it. almost had a “Contact” kind of feel to it. as if the message was received long after the aliens’ ship had departed.
