July 3rd, 1863

In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3rd, 1863 the dead rose.
In a besieged Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 3rd, 1863 the dead rose.

General Robert E. Lee and General George Gordon Meade at Gettysburg both mishandled the threat of the undead. Their battered troops were consumed or infected, and a horde of over one hundred ten thousand corpses replaced the two armies.

General Ulysses S. Grant, thinking that General John C. Pemberton was attempting a morbid ruse, refused to acknowledge the undead threat. Union forces quickly found themselves attacked on all fronts by an army of cannibalistic dead. By July 4th, the entire Vicksburg area was home to over one hundred forty thousand living dead.

The Independence Day of the Dead, as it came to be known, was the beginning of the War Of The Dead.

The Dead hadn’t fired a single shot, most people didn’t know there was even a war, but their numbers stood at nearly three hundred thousand.

I, Samuel James Marshall, fled across the Mississippi to escape the hordes.
