They might burn the fort, he thought, as he finished carving his message. With warm blood seeping down his crippled leg, he limped towards the trees. He would name his antagonists in the flesh of the forest. England would know where to find the savages who had done this.

Manteo had come to warn them. He claimed the settlers had killed three of the Croatan.

“Blood debt,” he kept saying to the confused settlers. “War party!”

The settlers had tried to calm him, but he would not be calmed. He took their muskets and placed them in the hands of their men, pointing towards the forests.

Finally, time ran out for the colony. Arrows and spears rained in upon them. The colony responded with gunfire. In the end, all but a few of the colonists were slaughtered. Structures were destroyed. Guff ordered all traces hidden.

Thal encountered one final colonist carving symbols into a tree. He knew Guff wanted no survivors to incite the English.

The colonist died at the tip of a spear having only finished “C-R-O”.
