A Long Love

“Marry me, Juliet, you never have to be alone,” he was on one knee. Juliet pulled him to his feet.

“I won’t have you on your knees, Jake,” she said softly. “You don’t have to beg. I was always yours.”

Jacob looked confused. “Is that … Is that a yes?” he said tentatively.

She laughed at his nervousness. “Of course it is!”

Seventy years later I watched my parents go their separate ways. And as my mother was committed to the ground, I saw the gleam leave my father’s eyes. She had truly been his life.

That night I comforted him to the early hours of the morning, and that’s when he started to pale. I kissed his forehead to say goodnight and began to panic. He was so cold. I held his wrist in my hand before crying out. This was his fate. She really had been his life, and now she was gone, he commit to his promise.

Juliet embraced her new fiancé, as he whispered in her ear,

“I will follow you through life, to death, and beyond.”
