I like it. Especially the bit about doing the opposite of what’s on the DVD. Too often with humans under pressure, we skip steps and don’t pay attention.

There’s a famous list of instructions you can give to students to test this. You tell them that they have to follow the instructions EXACTLY, and there is a prize for the fastest, etc.

Then you give them these :
1. Read all of the instructions NOW.
2. Write your name on the page.
3. Shout out that you are at step 3, because you are now half way through the test.
4. Write out the first 4 decimal places of 1/7
5. Raise both your hands in the air.
6. You do not have to perform steps 3-5
7. Finish test

It’s amazing how many of them will shout and hold their hands in the air.
