Love thy Nemesis

“I wish I didn’t have to do this.”
Stoneo stood over the City’s nemesis, Phantom Firata, as she gasped for breath beneath him. “You won’t… do anything,” she panted.
“That was a long time ago, Ellis.” Stoneo backed away from the woman at his feet. “Back then, we would never have met this way. You’re damned now, and I’m revered.”

“Damned, am I?” Firata scrambled to her feet and aimed her spirit guns at her enemy’s back. “I’ll show you damned!”
Stoneo turned with his arms spread as Firata pulled the triggers. The blast hit him at full power and surrounded his golem body as the Phantom let out a scream.
“No!”

Stoneo staggered back into the wall.
“Why didn’t you defend?” she yelled, running over to him. “Why didn’t you defend? Why didn’t you kill me?”
“You were right,” he whispered as his lifeforce ebbed from his lips. “I could never kill you.”
“Forgive me,” she whispered as the light died from his eyes.

Then the room shook as her bomb blew up the City from Stoneo’s deathbed and took the pair to the stars.
