Justice, Retribution, and Shut Up

Beaming and struggling to contain excitement the younger fellow whispered inreverentially, “It’s a good day for justice, eh Big D?”

Big D rolled his eyes, mostly on account of the fact that no other soul in all creation referred to him as ‘Big D’. He made no other answer, only went on scanning their surroundings for the next moment, the next opportunity.

Undeterred, his companion said, “You and I, we’re the lucky ones, out here to act as implements of justice, to bring order, to bring…”

“Peace,” came the road weary interruption, “Peace and quiet.” It was a statement, perhaps a command, not the sort you make forcefully but one that is felt by a force of presence. The drudgery of mundane life inched past them for a while as they trod the day away.

Unable to remain quiet, the younger tried, “I’m just saying that justice…”

“Justice? Son, there ain’t no justice in this world, just a painful cycle of retribution. If you’re lucky, you punch out before the cycle comes back round to you. Now shut up.”
