coffee

It’s already the fifth cup of coffee. The dense aroma of roasted Arabican coffee beans is heavy upon her olfactory senses but more so, on her mind. The illuminated laptop screen casted shadows over her countenance, emphasising the fine lines that added itself on with age. To her adolescent simplicity, coffee symbolised maturity, adulthood but now, it is simply reduced to an addictive beverage that had slipped itself among the flurry of events which came along with her bustling lifestyle. Vague images of a larger person with an imposing presence, her mother, hurriedly sipping the steaming bitter, black liquid appears in her mind’s eye. For some reason, she does not have an impression of her mother’s face. She comforts herself – it has been years, the ephemeral childhood.
Her mind drifts… She is now walking through time, into the memories within the black aroma.
