New Kid on the block

Simon carried on the conversation without slowing even when the new kid rolled up, looking confused.

Simon didn’t like the new kid. He had first arrived in their class yesterday, the Mrs James introducing him slowly as she always did, as if they were the stupid ones, not him. SIMON! How dare he have the same name? He’d resolved either to ignore or simply call him new kid from now on. He was Simon first.

Anyway, New Kid had spent the whole time since his first arrival doping around, clearly not understanding anything that was said to him. Some of the other kids had taken to writing him notes. His reading seemed a bit better than his other communication skills. “Here comes stupid”, he said to his mates, who laughed, and shot New Kid the distainful look reserved for people Simon told them not to like. New Kid walked away, shoulders slumped.

A teacher had to pull him off his former friend at lunch time.
“Simon, what did he say to make you break his arm?”
“He asked him ‘what are sounds like?’”
