The Library of the Forbidden and Unknowable: The Second Visitor

The librarian startled a little at the request. At nearly every other library this would have been a perfectly normal and harmless action, and the word “library” did carry the implication that the contents would be freely available. For this one, it was rather the opposite, though.

She decided to just act professional. “And which book would that be?” She asked with a polite desk-staff voice and smile.

“I can’t actually remember the title or the author,” the second visitor replied apologetically, “but I have some notes here, maybe you recognize them?”

The visitor rifled through her pockets while talking, and eventually came up with a piece of paper that seemed to have been through a lot. The paper was criss-crossed with writing of various kinds, some of it in English, but most in strange scribbles that, despite the librarian’s training in Eldritch languages and clear resemblance of one, did not make the least bit of sense to her.

“Uhh,” she said at last. “I think… I think I might need some help here.”
