Facing Earthward on Another World
Many cultures see pictures in the stars and tell stories about them. But do other planets have astrological mythologies?
The image http://outerhoard.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/earthward1.png shows part of the night sky on another world. To see it a different way up, replace the number 1 in the filename with another number from 2 to 8. Use whichever orientation you prefer.
This world orbits a star not too unlike our sun. You can’t see our sun (it’s hundreds of lightyears away) but it would be in the dead centre of the images.
Decide what your aliens see in this patch of sky (I see a flower) and write a story referring to this constellation. Make it relevant that Earth is in that direction. You may post a comment explaining how to see the constellation.
Idea 1. A spaceship from Earth arrives, and whether it’s welcomed or not depends on whether the constellation signifies good or evil. Idea 2. The inhabitants are descended from colonists, and in their legend the constellation is somehow “home”.
