Yet darkness does not cause fear. It is not because something is unseen that terror grips our heart.

It is because we put things in the darkness. We give birth to the beasts under our beds. We conceive of monsters in undiscovered lands or in our closets.

We fear, because we imagine. Our greatest gift allows us to fill the void with creatures which supersede reality. Our thoughts can go where our eyes cannot; when they do, they can bring delight as well as despair.

Storytellers populate the darkness with their own creations, sharing them with others. These avidly devour the tales, as someone else’s darkness is not as scary as their own. The best horror movie never evokes as much terror as what we imagine might lay right around the corner.

Darkness is the source of creation, as nothing fuels imagination as intensely.
