Self-Love

“Oh Darling, you can’t go away!”
“You know I must. They are starting to catch on. We have to be away from each other for awhile.”
“I’ll die without you.” A long pause grows awkward.
Disgusted now, he says, “You know that’s not true. And I resent the fact that you would even utter those despicable words!” He turns away. She reaches for him, not wanting to fight before he leaves her.
“I’m sorry, darling. You know how I get. I always feel so anxious when you’re not around to reassure me. I don’t know what I’ll do if I get into one of my moods and you’re not there to help!” He slaps her, hard.
“Snap out of it! You know that I won’t let anything happen to you. I can’t! And you know that even when we are apart, I’m still watching over you. I love you for Pete’s sake!” Silence once again grows.
She whispers, “I love you too.” They lean in and kiss, the anger dissipating into passion.
“Take me, darling, one last time.” He reaches over and turns out the light.
Walking to the bed, he lies down. Alone.
