Day 2: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

January 2nd

I know what you’re thinking as you read this. The Good Earth? Why would you read the Good Earth?

Two words.

Mrs. Grundel.

Now I have the utmost respect for Pearl S. Buck, however this book was to put it simply horrid.

We learned of our fates the day before break.

All i remember coming out of her mouth as she handed us the book in English was,

“Here’s some light reading for over the break, one of my favorites, I’m sure you will enjoy it just as much as I did.”

I figured it couldn’t be that bad, though Mrs. Grundel’s judgment wasn’t exactly the best. (She’s been married 4 times)

I was dead wrong.

Like any good student I started the book a good two days before we had to come back from break.

Now I’m sure Pearl S. Buck was a wonderful person, and maybe she was just having an off year when she wrote this, but honestly I don’t know what the people who hand out the Nobel Prize were smoking the day they gave it to that book.

Maybe Opium?
