I’m reading this thing after coming into it mid-series and then going to the beginning, but I’m going to go ahead and hazard a guess:
Yes, one could change the Present, whatever that may be, but only because by traveling into the Past does Present become Future, and therefore, mutable. Of the myriad possible futures, they collapse into one set timeline or path dependent upon the decisions and outcomes of the Present, which is itself the result of decisions and outcomes of the Past. Therefore, by going back in time, one can alter these outcomes.
Time to read the rest of the series and see if my hunch is anywhere close to correct.
