I’m afraid to say I’ve never watched Firefly, nor Serenity – my Whedon experience is more Buffy-based, but I still enjoyed this for the story you told…
The characters seem pretty fully formed in your mind, which can only be a good thing considering the challenge – your plot’s good and intriguing as well… Perhaps I ought to check Firefly out! MH :)
Ooooh, this is veeeeeeery good! Focusing on the oft-forgot Shephard Book is a smart choice, and by also adding one of those tense little ‘face-off’ moments that Firefly was so good at doing, you’ve made a brilliant story. Great job! =))
I really enjoyed this as well. I have a hard time these days deciding which network is more stupid: FOX or NBC. Killing Firefly was one of the worst travesties in television history, in my opinion. I think you captured the characters very well, and I think your dialogue matches the style of the show. Now you just need to write a sequel that tells us what the hell Book did!
Ha! Kaellinn…I don’t think I can take that responsibility! I tell you that Book would have evolved to become the most pivotal character on the show, had the kitten-eating douches at Fox not axed the show.
I think you did a great job capturing both of those characters. The standoff seems a bit forced considering their relationship and mutual respect, but I’ll give it a pass considering the condensed space you had to set up the meeting.
I’m also a bit unsure of the phrase “not sure the verse has enough time.” I totally understand what you’re getting at, but we always think of the universe in units of distance. Logically, it makes sense, but at first glance it feels just a bit off. Not sure what I’d do differently, so I’m not that helpful.
Overall, I very much enjoyed it. For the most part, it’s very true to the characters and setting. I’m also interested to see what your ideas are on who Book really is. There were definite hints that he was a bit of a scoundrel in his past life during the show.
You see, I read it differently. I took it to mean that there isn’t enough bible verses to read to make Mal change his mind. In other words he considers him a lost cause. How did you mean it anyway Ben?
