Chapter 1: The Mean Bean

It was Fall of 1995 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The tourist season had just ended. The locals looked forward to this time of year. Woods Hole would shed it’s crowded streets and demanding tourists and the real Woods Hole would come alive. The town centered around a coffee shop named the “Mean Bean”.

That morning the Mean Bean was packed. Everyone was discussing their off season plans. Hector, the owner of the shop, was busy making coffee and serving pastries when the delivery arrived. Today’s delivery was from the Big Island of Hawaii, the Kona Peaberry Mountain Roast. It was a particularly difficult bean to grow. It had to have just the right temperature, humidity, and acidic soil to grow. It was an expensive coffee too, $25.00 per lb..
